Starting a Career With Us
Each of our employment programs for students and recent grads offers an opportunity to translate your education and skill into an exciting new career.
STEP (Student Temporary Employment Program)
Here is where you can start during school break! This program offers temporary work experience for a few months so that you can see how we operate from the inside. Look for these programs in the late spring and early summer. Many of our STEP employees go on to our SCEP and FCIP programs.
SCEP (Student Career Experience Program)
Often referred to as a “co-op” program, this program offers part-time work experience while you are going to school, based upon an agreement between IRS and your college or university. When you graduate and complete our program, you will be eligible for a non-competitive conversion to a career or career-conditional appointment. While employed in this program, you are entitled to the benefits of federal employment based upon the number of hours you work. Click here for more information
FCIP (Federal Career Intern Program)
This internship program offers full-time employment for students who have recently completed their degree programs and are looking for an entry-level profession. The internship lasts 2 years (3 years for some occupations), and you have a formal training plan for one of our premiere occupations, such as Internal Revenue Agent, Special Agent, or Internal Revenue Officer. Upon successful completion of the internship program, you will be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a career or career-conditional appointment. While employed in this program, you will be entitled to all benefits of federal employment, such as health insurance, holiday pay, and annual leave. Click here for more information
PMF (Presidential Management Intern Program/Presidential Management Fellows)
This two-year program (three years with approval) is designed for advanced degree students. It requires nomination by your school and completion of an OPM-administered assessment. Upon successful completion of the program, you will be eligible for conversion to a career or career-conditional appointment.
