Festus Tax Exempt/Government Exempt Revenue Agent What I do is to audit exempt organizations throughout this Washington metropolitan area. I have a master's degree in accounting. Prior to working for the IRS, I was working for the District of Columbia government. Yes, I worked there for about approximately 12 years in a law enforcement capacity. It is an accounting job with a caveat to it. The caveat is that you -- especially in the nonprofit division, you get to audit on a compliance basis. In other words, you check for, depending on facts and circumstances, of course, and there you get to check for compliance -- operations, making sure that, you know, these exempt organizations, again, are doing what they're supposed to be doing. And then, on the other hand, you have the financial audit, where you look at the internal controls -- what is going on with their banking records, what is going on with the signatories -- the basic accounting, you know, comes to play in that area. What I found out is, some of these organizations, nonprofit organizations, don't quite get the laws. They don't know the exempt-organization laws governing exempt organizations. So the ability to teach them and point them in the right direction is very fulfilling. IRS is a good place to work for. You know, there is never a dull moment. You have challenges, and you have fulfillment. You have a lot of benefits. You have job security. And the position is not, I mean, an office where you sit down behind, in a cubicle all day. You know, you get to the field.
